Surge protection used to be optional. It isn't anymore. Current code, adopted here in New Jersey, requires a surge protective device at the service on new panels and, importantly, whenever an existing panel is replaced. In other words, if you're upgrading your panel, a whole-home protector comes with it as standard, not as an add-on.

The device is a Type 1 or Type 2 protector, installed in or right beside the panel so it can act the instant a surge arrives. For homes that aren't due for a panel upgrade, we can add a protector to a suitable existing panel on its own. Either way, it becomes a permanent part of your electrical system rather than one more thing to plug in and replace. It's a natural piece of any new installation, and it pairs well with whole-home backup like a generator.
